Like most leather items, they will have a solvent like smell from the finishing process. The ones that I use lasted for a couple of weeks once opened.Additionally, these will need to stretch and form slightly once you put your checks and register in. (I used a couple of hardbound books and left them on the table overnight for a few days and got excellent results with both the tan and green ones I use for my business and personal checking accounts)
